Speckle Observations of Binary Stars with the WIYN Telescope. IV. Differential Photometry Five hundred seventy-six magnitude difference measures are presented for260 binary stars. These measures are derived from CCD-based speckleobservations taken at the WIYN 3.5 m telescope at Kitt Peak NationalObservatory during the period 1997-2000. Separations of the systemsrange from over 1" down to near the diffraction limit of the telescope.A study of multiple measures of the same targets indicates that themeasures have a typical uncertainty of better than 0.13 mag per 2 minuteobservation, and that multiple observations can be averaged to arrive atsmaller uncertainties. Results presented here are also compared, insofaras it is possible, with measures in the Hipparcos Catalogue and toprevious studies using adaptive optics. No major systematic errors wereidentified. The WIYN Observatory is a joint facility of the University ofWisconsin-Madison, Indiana University, Yale University, and the NationalOptical Astronomy Observatory.
| The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of 14 000 F and G dwarfs We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age, kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities, complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate, however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk, the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity, corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. More advanced analyses of thisrich material will require careful simulations of the selection criteriafor the sample and the distribution of observational errors.Based on observations made with the Danish 1.5-m telescope at ESO, LaSilla, Chile, and with the Swiss 1-m telescope at Observatoire deHaute-Provence, France.Complete Tables 1 and 2 are only available in electronic form at the CDSvia anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/418/989
| Speckle Observations of Binary Stars with the WIYN Telescope. II. Relative Astrometry Measures during 1998-2000 Five hundred twelve relative astrometry measures are presented for 253double stars, including 53 double stars discovered by Hipparcos. In 15cases, relative astrometry is reported for the first time for newlyconfirmed pairs. In addition, 20 high-quality nondetections ofcompanions are reported for stars suspected of being nonsingle byHipparcos. Observations were taken using a fast-readout CCD camerasystem at the WIYN 3.5 m telescope at Kitt Peak, Arizona. In comparingthese measures with ephemeris predictions for binary stars with verywell known orbits, we find that the measurement precision is better than3 mas in separation and 1° in position angle per individualobservation. Measurement precision and detection capabilities are fullydiscussed, and confirmed orbital motion is reported in four cases of theHipparcos double star discoveries. | Photoelectric observations of CPM stars in the BVRI system A photometric program to estimate the frequency of close unresolvedcompanions in visual binary systems has been developed. The sensitivityof the detection depends on the accuracy of the differential photometricmeasurements of binary components. Unresolved companions up to sevenmagnitudes fainter than the primary are detectable in the BVRIphotometric systems.
| Common proper motion stars in the AGK 3 A search was made of common-proper-motion (CPM) systems among AGK 3stars. The selection of physical systems was based upon the ratiobetween the angular separation (rho) and the proper motion (mu); the CPMstars found are presented in two tables. Table I lists systems withrho/mu less than 1000 years. It contains 326 entries, and the proportionof optical pairs is estimated to be 1 percent. Table II lists systemswith rho/mu in the range 1000 to 3500 years; it contains 113 systems, but only 60 percent of them are physical. Nevertheless, these systemsoften have separations larger than 10,000 AU and are the mostinteresting for the study of the tail of the distribution function ofthe semimajor axes.
| Binaries among bright stars - Systems with evolved primary components and their relation to the properties of main-sequence binaries A study on the distribution of Delta m of main-sequence visual binaries(VBs), derived using previously published data, suggests that thesubgiants and early-type giants are one magnitude brighter than whenthey were dwarfs. The progenitors of late-type giants are on average F1dwarfs, while those of VBs with Delta m of less than 8, 5, or 3magnitudes are on average A7, A2, and B9.5 dwarfs, respectively. Theintrinsic logarithmic distribution of the semimajor axis (a) is derivedfrom dwarf, subgiant, and early-type giant VBs considered together, andis found to be constant for a of greater than 30 AU. Takingspectroscopic binaries into account, the proportion of single starsamong all stellar systems is found to be at the most 23 percent.
| Dependence of seeing correlation on image separation at the CFH telescope on Mauna Kea Trailed images of optical pairs of stars obtained with theCanada-France-Hawaii 3.6-m telescope on Mauna Kea were analyzed to studyseeing fluctuations. The data show that seeing fluctuations, evaluatedfrom the 'macroscopic' properties of a guide star image, i.e., imagecentroid and image width, are correlated for separations as large as 1arc min. Seeing fluctuations as frequencies less than 5 Hz werecorrelated for most image pairs in this particular data set. Higherfrequency variations were correlated only for pairs with separationsless than 8 arc sec. In a simulation of very high resolution imageryusing an offset guide star, the quality of detected program images wereimproved by as much as 70 percent. Guide decision times ranged from 10to 50 msec, depending on the observational circumstances.
| Luminosity classification with the Washington system The DDO 51 filter has been added to the Washington photometric system. The strong surface gravity sensitivity of the Mg I 'b' triplet and MgHbands which it monitors allows the system to easily discriminate betweendwarfs and giants of late G and K spectral type. The system isespecially suited as a membership criterion for abundance studies ofdistant cluster giants. The Mg index is insensitive to surface gravityvariations among G giants. The metallicity sensitivity among giants isalso relatively weak. Population I and II giants can be distinguishedbut no further differentiation is evident.
| A sample of solar-type stars of known age A sample of field F and G dwarfs of known ages is presented. All thedwarfs are secondaries of visual binaries in which the temperature andgravity of the hotter primary has been estimated from Stromgrenphotometry, and its age derived from reference to isochrones. This ageis taken to apply to the secondary. Even in the case of F-typesecondaries, which themselves have measured Stromgren indices, it ismuch better to estimate ages from the primaries as it is demonstratedthat use of isochrones to determine age of stars not far evolved fromthe main sequence can lead to significant systematic overestimates ofages when the photometric measurements have typical random errors. Anumber of systems in which photometry is available for both componentshave primaries which appear much younger than the secondaries, suggesting a need for further investigation.
| Uvby-beta photometry of visual double stars - Absolute magnitudes of intrinsically bright stars Individual absolute visual magnitudes M(v) are derived for intrinsicallybright stars and evolved stars. The results are collected for 106objects believed to be members of binary systems. uvby-beta photometrywas empirically calibrated in terms of M(v) for main sequence stars andphotoelectrically determined apparent magnitudes. The derived M(v)values are not significantly different from those stated in the Wilsoncatalogue (1976). Binary systems with main sequence primaries andsecondary components off the main sequence were also investigated.Several systems in which at least one component may be in the pre-mainsequence contraction stage are pointed out. A wide variety of commentsand derived data are given individually for 136 double stars, includingmetallicities, distance moduli, and masses.
| A photoelectric measurement of magnesium for late-type stars A photoelectric index of MgH + Mg b for late-type stars has been createdby the addition of one filter bandpass to the DDO system. Measurementsshow that this index has good sensitivity to surface gravity for Kstars, and suggest that it can differentiate metal-poor halo giants fromdisk stars. From this index, involving measurement through two filtersalone, it appears that membership can be determined for stars on thegiant branch of globular clusters. It is possible that the index couldbe used, after calibration with cluster giants, to determine ages ofgiant stars in the field.
| Cyanogen strengths, mixing and supermetallicity in G and K giants Wide visual binaries consisting of a G or K giant in physicalassociation with an F dwarf, observed using DDO and ubvy photometry, were used to study the possibility of mixing in the giants prior to orduring helium core burning. The two abundance indices, delta m1 of theuvby system, and delta CN of the DDO system, are compared to study thepossibility that mixing from a hydrogen burning region has affected theCN strengths of the giants.
